'Lopes forced fourth set
ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Grand Canyon was able to force a fourth set, but were unable to complete the comeback against Chico State in the Seawolf Spike Invitational at Sonoma State University Saturday.
GCU (1-2) lost 3-1 by set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-20.
In the third set, the Antelopes trailed 23-22 before scoring four of the final five points. Three of the points came on kills from freshman Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley), who finished the contest with nine kills and a .562 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) led the 'Lopes in kills with 16. She hit .286 and added seven digs.
Sophomore setter Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) and sophomore middle hitter Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ, Christian)each had six kills. Preach added 28 assists and three block assists. Taylor had a solo block and three block assists.
Junior libero Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) accumulated 16 digs, while senior Tommyka Henry (Phoenix, AZ, Alhambra) had three block assists.
GCU wraps up play against No. 21 Sonoma State later Saturday.
