Grand Canyon welcomes Western New Mexico for the 2010 volleyball home opener at Antelope Gymnasium Tuesday.
GCU is coming off a 1-3 trip at the Fifth Annual Seawolf Spike Invitational at Sonoma State. GCU played competitively, going four sets in three of four matches. Three of the four Antelope opponents were coming off 20-win seasons, including San Francisco State, the team GCU defeated. One of the losses came against 21st-ranked Sonoma State.
Sophomore
Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) led the team with 45 kills, including a career-high 17 in the victory over San Francisco State. She added a career-best 20 digs against CSU Stanislaus. Her kill total ranked 10th in the eight-team invitational.
Freshman outside hitter
Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley) had an impressive debut with 40 kills and a .281 hitting percentage, eighth best in the Spike.
Sophomore
Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) had 113 assists and a 7.53 average. She was sixth among setters. Junior libero
Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) had 75 digs, five per game, and placed a GCU best fifth.
Two Antelopes ranked among the top 10 in blocks. Sophomore
Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ, Christian)was sixth (11) and senior
Tommyka Henry (Phoenix, AZ, Alhambra) was seventh (10).
Tuesday's contest with Western New Mexico will be the 35th in the all-time series, most of any opponent. GCU leads 19-15. The teams last met in 2007 with the Mustangs taking a 3-0 win at the Adams State Invitational.
WNMU is 2-2 on the season with both losses coming against Pacific West Conference teams. Hawai'i at Hilo beat the Mustangs 3-1 and Hawai'i Pacific earned a 3-0 win at the Vulcan Classic hosted by UHH.
Outside hitters Natali Murdock and Angelina Pulu had 127 of the teams 193 kills.
The Mustangs were picked to finish second in the West Division and seventh overall in the 13-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. They were 12-16 last season.
