ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Grand Canyon finished off its four-match trip to the Seawolf Spike Invitational at Sonoma State University with a 3-0 loss to the 21st-ranked hosts Saturday.
GCU (1-3) lost by set scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-13.
Freshman
Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley) had a team-high 11 kills. Senior
Megan Toth (Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia) had six kills and a .353 hitting percentage and junior
Stephanie McBride (Newbury Park, CA, Newbury Park) had eight kills.
Sophomore setter
Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) had 26 assists and two service aces and junior libero
Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) had 14 digs.
Junior
Brooke Blomenkamp (Gering, NE, Gering) had four kills and 11 digs.
In the first set, GCU trailed as much as six and by five as late as 19-14. Blomenkamp and sophomore
Sara Bowden (Tempe, AZ, Corona del Sol) had kills to cut the deficit to 19-16. At 20-16, GCU scored the next three points. Preach had a kill, sophomore
Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) had a service ace and Ausmus added another kill.
McBride, sophomore middle hitter
Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ, Christian) and Ausmus all had kills to get the match to 23-22.
Neither team led by more than three in the second set. GCU, after a McBride kill and McBride-Preach block, led 9-6.
The nationally-ranked hosts came back to lead 18-15 before consecutive kills from Toth. A Seawolf attack error tied the match. An Ausmus kill kept the set going at 24-23.
For the invitational, Ehlo led GCU in kills with 45 and in service aces with six. Ausmus had 40 kills and a .281 hitting percentage. Durbin averaged five digs per game and had 75 overall. Taylor led in total blocks with 11 while senior
Tommyka Henry (Phoenix, AZ, Alhambra) had 10.
GCU opens its homecourt season Tuesday with a 6 p.m. contest at Antelope Gym against Western New Mexico.
