BELMONT, Calif. -- A road trip that had its share of heartache ended on a happy note.
Grand Canyon, coming off back-to-back five-set losses at Academy of Art, swept Notre Dame de Namur 3-0 at Walter Gleason Gym Saturday to finish its four-match Pacific West Conference road trip to the Bay Area.
The Antelopes (5-10, 1-3) won by set scores of 27-25, 25-22, 25-21.
GCU trailed 17-13 in the first set before rallying to tie the set 19-19. Tied at 25-25, Grand Canyon scored the final two points on a
Brooke Blomenkamp (Gering, NE, Gering) kill, assisted by
Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep), and a NDNU attack error.
In the second set, the Antelopes were down 19-17 prior to two kills from freshman
Kaitlynn Ausmus (Glendale, AZ, Deer Valley), another NDNU attack error and a
Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) service ace.
Again, a comeback was needed in the third set. Down 14-13, GCU went on a 7-0 run. A Preach kill tied the match and a block from Blomenkamp and frosh
Kristen Johannsen (Phoenix, AZ, Valley Christian) gave the 'Lopes the lead. Erica Ehlo followed with a solo block and kill for a 17-14 advantage. Blomenkamp and Ehlo added kills to wrap up the run.
Ehlo and Ausmus had 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Ehlo had a .294 hitting average and six digs. Blomenkamp and
Stephanie McBride (Newbury Park, CA, Newbury Park) each had six kills. Preach had 32 assists, six digs and two block assists. Durbin had 23 digs and
Sara Bowden (Tempe, AZ, Corona del Sol) added 10 digs.
Tommyka Henry (Phoenix, AZ, Alhambra) and Blomenkamp each had three block assists.
GCU will host the first of six straight matches at Antelope Gymnasium 6 p.m. Friday against Dominican University.
