Grand Canyon spent Friday night extending streaks.
With a 3-1 win against Dominican University of California, the Antelopes won their second straight Pacific West Conference match and 10th straight match at Antelope Gymnasium.
Downing the Penguins 25-18, 22-25, 25-21, 25-16, GCU improved to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in the PacWest. The Antelopes won their final six home matches last season and are 4-0 at Antelope Gym this year.
"It's no secret we haven't played well on the road, but we're undefeated at home and we wanted to defend that," said GCU coach Kris Naber.
"Maybe it's The Black Hole," said sophomore setter Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep), giving credit to the new student cheering section. "We always talk about pride and playing at home."
Aiding Friday's win was the team's quick start, something it hadn't been able to do in some of its recent losses, and even in some wins.
After a Preach kill put the ‘Lopes ahead 5-4, Grand Canyon led the remainder of the first set. Senior outside hitter Megan Toth (Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia) had five kills in nine attempts, without an error. Sophomore outside hitter Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) was 4-for-9 without an error. As a team, the Antelopes had a .353 attack percentage.
While the start of the match was better, the ‘Lopes had to battle back from mid-match struggles. GCU trailed the entire second set and late into the third. Tied at 20, Grand Canyon scored three straight points. Another Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) dig -- she had a match-high 27 -- kept a rally alive for a Toth kill. Ehlo and Shelby Taylor (Phoenix, AZ, Christian) combined for a block and, with the aid of the net; Toth added her fourth service ace of the night. Dominican followed with a point, but the ‘Lopes wrapped up the set with a Taylor kill and combo block from Preach and senior Tommyka Henry (Phoenix, AZ, Alhambra, Mesa Community College).
"We focused all week on starting strong," said Preach. "Sometimes we focus too much and we end up making mistakes. I think it's a maturity thing and we continue to mature each match."
GCU has just two seniors and five of Friday's six starters were underclassmen.
A Taylor fourth-set kill tied the match at 10 and started a 7-0 Antelope run. Toth had a pair of service aces and Taylor and Ehlo shared a block.
Ehlo led GCU with 13 kills. She added 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Toth had 12 kills, 17 digs and six service aces. Preach had 43 assists. Taylor had four block assists and one solo to go with eight kills.
The teams meet again 6 p.m. Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium.
