SAN FRANCISCO -- Trailing 2-0 and facing match point three times, Grand Canyon forced a fifth set before dropping a 3-2 Pacific West Conference decision to host Academy of Art at Kezar Pavilion Wednesday.
GCU dropped to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in the PacWest. AAU is 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest.
The Antelopes lost by set scores of 25-19, 25-12, 24-26, 24-26, 15-11.
Down 24-22 in the third set, GCU scored the game's final four points. Junior
Stephanie McBride (Newbury Park, CA, Newbury Park) started it off with a kill and junior
Brooke Blomenkamp (Gering, NE, Gering) tied it with a service ace. An Urban Knight ball-handling error gave GCU the lead and a kill from sophomore outside hitter
Erica Ehlo (Spokane, WA, Lewis and Clark) made it 2-1.
Trailing 24-23 in the fourth set, Ehlo tied it with a kill. A block from Blomenkamp and freshman
Kristen Johannsen (Phoenix, AZ, Valley Christian) gave the advantage to the Antelopes and a Blomenkamp kill forced the fifth set.
Grand Canyon had a lead of 6-4 in the fifth set.
Sophomore setter
Kristen Preach (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier Prep) finished with 34 assists, nine kills and eight digs. Senior outside hitter
Megan Toth (Phoenix, AZ, Arcadia) had 11 kills, 11 digs and three block assists. Junior libero
Laurann Durbin (Phoenix, AZ, Sunnyslope) had a team-best 13 digs. McBride had eight kills, a .462 hitting percentage and three block assists.
Toth, Durbin and Blomenkamp had two service aces each. Ehlo added nine kills and seven digs.
The two teams meet again 7 p.m. Friday at Kezar Pavilion. It is the third of a four-game road trip. GCU takes on Notre Dame de Namur Saturday.
