Men's Tennis Team Wins Two Matches on Same Day, Women's Team Captures Four Straight

The final road trip for the GCU men's and women's tennis teams finshed with the men winning two matches on the same day and the women finishing completing four straight wins.
On Friday, the women defeated New Mexico Military Institute in an exhibition and then won their second 5-4 come-from-behind win in consecutive days. This is the first win over Mesa State University that GCU has had in many years. The Lady Tennis 'Lopes trailed 2-1 after the doubles. Vergnet and Haldeman, GCU, did a great job to get us on the board with their win at No. 1 doubles. Those two continued their momentum by winning at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and giving us the lead. Mesa State took the lead back when it won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
When Ali Brackey won for GCU at No. 6 singles, it tied the match and put all of the focus on senior Mandy Prudhomme's No. 5 singles match. After losing her set lead by dropping the second set, Mandy was able to clinch the match in a 10-point match tiebreak to give GCU the win. It was the second time this season that Mandy won a third-set match tiebreak to clinch a 5-4 win for the team.
At the same time that Mandy was in the deciding match for the women's team, Brian Kirby, GCU sophomore, was in the final set of the match clincher for the men. The GCU men's team also battled back to 4-all against Mesa State after being down 2-1 from the doubles. Mesa State's No. 5 proved too tough as he won the third set and closed the match for them. This was our closest loss of the season. It could've gone either way. The guys really played great and fought hard.
Schroeder and Kirby won their No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreak after saving five match points. Singles winners were Patrice Giraldi, Szymon Gas and Eric Schroeder at positions 1, 2 and 3.
On Saturday, the women had a break from the dramatic wins by beating Colorado Christian 9-0. The match of the day was Cecilia Vergnet at No. 1 singles. She trailed by a set and won two straight tiebreakers to even the match and clinch the third set. This win gave the GCU women their 15th overall win of the season.
The men had the perfect ending to their season with two D-II wins against Colorado Christian and Colorado State-Pueblo. The men swept Colorado Christian in all nine matches. Later in the day, they shut out Colorado State-Pueblo 5-0. GCU was leading in the reamaining four unfinished matches. This brought GCU men's tennis win total to six and allowed the team to finish the season on a two-match winning streak. This is a huge improvement over last year's one win. The guys made major strides over last year and we are looking forward to doing the same next year. The guys are poised to turn the close losses we had this year into wins next year.
