No. 5 seed Dixie State College squeaked by No. 4 seed Grand Canyon University, 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship today at the Paseo Racquet Club in Glendale.
GCU junior Cecila Vergnet (La Colle sur Loup. France) defeated Dixie State freshman Alicia Holm, 7-6, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, and junior Stephanie Haldeman (Peoria, AZ/Centennial) handily beat junior Lydia Hays, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2. At No. 3, Red Storm senior Ashley Lafeen defeated Antelopes junior Stefanie Griffin, 6-2, 6-0, and at No. 4 GCU freshman Kaila Knopf (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) -- again playing like an upperclassman -- beat freshman Adrienne Davis, 6-2, 6-1. No. 5 singles proved to be a tough match for the 'Lopes, as senior Mandy Prudhomme (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley) lost the first set, 6-2, and nearly pulled out the second set before losing, 7-5. No. 6 singles -- the final and deciding match of the day -- went three sets, with Red Storm sophomore Lauren Tarver outlasting junior Ali Brackey (Sahuarita, AZ/Sahuarita), 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
At No. 1 doubles, Vergnet and Haldeman defeated Holm and freshman Courtney Kezerian, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, Lafeen and Hays beat Knopf and Griffin, 8-3. And in the closest match of the day, at No. 3 doubles, Davis and Tarver edged Brackey and Prudhomme, 8-7. It marked the first time in Dixie State women’s tennis history that the Red Storm has advanced into the conference semifinals.
GCU and No. 8 seed Dominican University of California will square off at 1 p.m. on Friday in one of two consolation semifinals.
