GCU Women Win Sixth Straight Match, Men Lose Close One

Today's win for the GCU women's tennis team brings its winning streak to six matches and moves its overall record to 11-10 on the season. The girls really played well today. I know it sounds silly since we won 9-0, but this is a match that could've gone either way. We have had very tough matches with Western New Mexico in the past, but today everybody clicked at the same way and played one of their best matches of the season.

GCU's Cecilia Vergnet and Stephanie Haldeman got the 'Lopes off to a great start with an 8-0 win at the No. 1 doubles spot. The teams of Knopf/Griffin and Prudhomme/Brackey finished the doubles sweep with hard-fought 8-6 wins. The momentum from the doubles carried over to singles, where the 'Lopes had straight-set wins on all six courts.

Once again, the GCU men's tennis team turned a 0-9 loss from last year into a very close loss this year. GCU's Sebastian Guevara and Szymon Gas kept the team in the match by saving three match points at No. 3 doubles to win in a tiebreaker. We were happy to go into the singles at 1-2 knowing that we had a chance to win four of the singles matches.

When the match was stopped with Western New Mexico's five-point clinch, GCU was leading by a set on the remaining three courts. If the matches were completed and GCU players kept their leads, the final score would've been 4-5. Patrice Giraldi, Will Herbert and Sebastian Guevara were a few games from adding to their singles win record. We get another shot at Western New Mexico next week in Colorado and, needless to say, the guys are looking forward to it.
