The Grand Canyon University men’s and women’s swimming teams opened their 2010-11 season with fourth and second place finishes, respectively, at the PCSC Relays in Riverside, Calif. this afternoon.
Host school Cal Baptist University won both the men’s and women’s meets.
The GCU women took home five first place finishes in the 10 swimming events contested, taking home top honors in the 4x100 free relay , 4x200 free relay, 3x500 free relay, 3x100 breast relay and 4x100 medley relay. The 4x200 free relay time of 7:56.36 set a new meet record for the event.
Karlee Grundeis (Bakersfield, CA, East Bakersfield),
Mychala Lynch (Phoenix, AZ, Xavier College Prep , Texas Christian University),
Samantha Magnani (Moorpark, CA, Moorpark) and
Catherine Polito (Cottonwood, AZ, Mingus Union) paced the way for the ‘Lopes, each swimming on three winning relay teams.
"The women improved over last years' times in this meet in every event but one," said head coach Steve Schaffer. "Our women's team has shown that they are much improved over last year's team and it is great to see the impact so many of our new swimmers are making this early in the season."
The men’s team took home second-place honors in the 4x50, 4x100 and 500 free (swam as 1x50, 1x100, 1x150, 1x200) relays this afternoon, showing improvement in seven of 10 events from last year. The foursome of
Michael Branning (Phoenix, AZ, Paradise Valley),
Johan Ivarsson (Sundsvall, Sweden, Sundsvall),
Artem Tretiakov (Donetsk, Ukraine, Donetsk National University) and
Charles Woodruff (Phoenix, AZ, Central) swam on each of the second-place finishing relays. Newcomer
Ivan Nechunaev (Tomsk, Russia , Tomsk National University) set a new team record with his leadoff leg of the 4x100 IM relay with a time of 54.27.
"This was a solid first meet for our guys and gave us a glimpse of the potential for us to add more All-American performances at the NCAA's this season," said Schaffer. "We still have a lot of work to do, but this is a great start."
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in the pool tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. in Riverside, for the PCSC Pentathlon.
