The Grand Canyon University men's soccer team, ranked No. 3 in the West Region in both the official NCAA poll and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and No. 21 in the nation in the NSCAA poll, suffered its first loss of the season tonight. The Antelopes, who had a 12-game unbeaten streak going back to last season, lost to Pacific West Conference foe Hawaii Pacific, 2-0, at the GCU Soccer Field.
GCU fell to 8-1-1 overall, 7-1-0 in the PacWest, while HPU improved to 7-2-0, 6-1-0. The 'Lopes remain in first place in the PacWest, but by only one game over the Sea Warriors.
Junior midfielder/forward Chance Bukoski scored HPU's first goal in the 33rd minute off of assists from senior defender/midfielder Mike Moloney and junior forward Richard Guffens.
The Sea Warriors' second goal was scored by defender Nathan Scott, a Phoenix native, on a penalty kick in the 89th minute.
The 'Lopes had an 11-5 advantage in shots in the game, as well as an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.
A total of 19 fouls were called, 13 of which were against HPU. Three yellow cards were issued, all against the Sea Warriors, and GCU senior midfielder
Joao Vieira (Amparo, Brazil/Barbosa, Marshalltown CC) received a red card in the 89th minute.
