OJAI, Calif. -- Grand Canyon's Stephanie Haldeman went 2-1 Thursday in the first day of competition at the 109th Ojai Valley Tournament in the women's Independent College weekend event.
Haldeman (pictured) beat 15th-seeded Joelle Tanaka of Biola, 6-1, 6-0, in the singles round of 64.
Haldeman fell to fifth-seeded Vanessa Heroux of Fresno Pacific, 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 32. GCU's Stefanie Griffin lost to Cal Lutheran University's Suz Namura, 6-0, 6-2. Lopes No. 3 hitter Veronica Brunk dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match to 16th-seeded Rebecca Lange of Pomona Pitzer.
GCU's No. 2 doubles tandem of Karen Peltin and Mandy Prudhomme lost to Redlands duo of Kaleena Wakamatsu and Sara Yoshinaga, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 64. At 42 years old, Peltin led GCU in singles wins with 11 and was second along with Prudhomme in doubles victories with nine.
"Karen Peltin was very happy with the final performance of her first and only college season," Grand Canyon coach Greg Prudhomme said. "Her and Mandy had a tough match against the No. 2 doubles team from the No. 11 Division III team in the country. They fought hard to 4-all in both sets and lost two long, even games at the end of each set. The team is going to miss Karen next year, especially Mandy as her doubles partner."
After receiving a first round bye, Haldeman and Tatiana Sumenkova beat Claremont-Mudd Scripts Colleges' Caroline Daly and Alle Hsu, 6-2, 6-3. The Antelopes pair advanced to Friday's quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m.
"Stephanie did a great job posting two wins for the team today," Prudhomme said, noting that GCU did not win a match at the tournament last year. "This is a great step in the right direction, and it is a sign for Stephanie, in particular, that she is maturing as a player. Tatiana stepped it up in only her second start of the season in doubles, and turned it into her first doubles win of the year."
The tournament continues through Saturday. GCU's men's team begins play Friday.
