SAN DIEGO -- Before the season, Grand Canyon coach Greg Prudhomme said his elder stateswoman would be one of the Antelopes' better players.
Thursday, she was GCU's best player.
Karen Peltin was Grand Canyon's only winner Thursday in the Antelopes' 8-1 loss to NAIA's No. 8-ranked Point Loma Nazarene. Peltin beat Brittany Hall at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) in a match that lasted two-and-a-half hours.
"She handled the pressure of the home crowd, and saved two set points in the first set before winning 9-7 in the tiebreaker," Prudhomme said. "She was fighting hard for our only win of the day in two tiebreakers."
GCU's Mandy Prudhomme lost to Samantha Mohr, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. In doubles play, Grand Canyon's Stephanie Haldeman and Veronica Brunk fell to Kelsey Weir and Rachel Owens at No. 1 pairs, 8-5.
"The girls had a little difficulty adjusting to the sea level altitude, but the opponents were more of the challenge," Prudhomme said.
Grand Canyon (5-4) plays Grossmont College at 1 p.m. Friday in San Diego.
