SAN RAFAEL, Calif. -- Coming off her first Pacific West Conference Player of the Week award, Grand Canyon University junior Kia Gibson (Nine Mile Falls, Wash./Lakeside/N. Idaho), proved why she took home the honors Thursday.
In a 69-52 win at Dominican, Gibson led the way with 24 points and six rebounds. Off the bench, the 6-0 center hit 11-of-14 field goals. She is averaging 20.3 points per game in her last three contests.
For GCU, it improved to 9-5 overall and 3-0 in the PacWest. The 'Lopes travel to Notre Dame de Namur Saturday.
"It's a road win and it's good to be 3-0," said GCU coach Trent May. "It's big to win on the road, especially when it's the first of a three-game stretch."
On a Gibson jumper, GCU took a 5-4 lead at the 16:50 mark of the first half. It started a 16-0 run. Gibson had nine of the 16 points. Junior guard Samantha Murphy (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier Prep) hit a 3-pointer, junior guard Katrina Graham (Mesa, Ariz./Desert Mountain/Mesa CC) added a layup and sophomore Steffani Liscum (Tucson, Ariz./Marana) hit two free throws.
Murphy finished with nine points and senior forward Stacy Haddow (pictured, Chino Valley, Ariz./Chino Valley) had eight points and was perfect from the field (3-for-3), including two three-point field goals.
Junior guard Kristi Girdley (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) had four steals. Girdley, Liscum and senior Ashley Hardin (Phoenix, Ariz./Marcos de Niza/N. Arizona) each had three assists. Graham had a game-high seven rebounds.
