GCU Women's Soccer Knocks Off No. 10 CSUSB![]()
The Grand Canyon University (GCU) women's soccer team overcame an early deficit and a torrent of wind and rain in the second half to defeat the region's 10th-ranked Division II team, California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB), 2-1, in a non-conference game tonight at the GCU Soccer Field.
CSUSB, coming off a 1-0 loss to West Region No. 6 Dixie State and a 2-1 victory over Montana State-Billings, are ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America West Region poll.
Sophomore midfielder Jaclyn Clark put the Coyotes on the scoreboard at 6:30 of the first half on an arching shot from the left side, high into the right side of the goal past the outstretched arms of Antelopes junior goalkeeper Mileena Buchei (No. 0, pictured; Stansbury, UT/Grantsville). GCU (2-0) senior midfielder/forward Kaylen Jackson (Tucson, AZ/Amphitheater), who had just entered the game, countered at 14:40 of the first half, and senior midfielder/forward Nichole Elias (Tucson, AZ/Saguaro) knocked in the game winner at 67:41.
It was Jackson's second goal of the season and the first for Elias.
GCU had 14 shots on goal, compared to 10 for CSUSB. Antelopes goalkeeper Laura Lyons had five saves, and Buchei had two.
CSUSB dropped to 1-2 on the season.
