GCU rally falls short in overtime loss to Dixie State
Grand Canyon rallied from a two-goal deficit to force overtime, but was unable to finish off the comeback, losing to Dixie State 3-2 in the Pacific West Conference opener for both school at the GCU Soccer Field Saturday.
Dixie State (2-3, 1-0) scored on a penalty kick by Whitley Davis with 6:53 left in the overtime.
Grand Canyon (3-3, 1-0) had scored twice in the game's final 21 minutes to erase the Red Storm's two-goal lead.
Freshman Sasha Scott (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real)scored her first collegiate goal on a header at the 70:39 mark on an assist by junior Kelcee Newell (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) to tie the match.
GCU's first goal came at the 69:23 mark when senior Nichole Elias (No. 18, right; Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) scored on the rebound of an attempt by junior Kayla Poe (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson).
GCU travels to Academy of Art Sept. 26. It is the first of three PWC road contests.
