KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii -- Grand Canyon beat Notre Dame de Namur, 5-0, Saturday at the Pacific West Conference women's tennis championships at Holua Resort at Mauna Loa Village.
It was the Antelopes' 10th win of the season. Not all the matches were needed to be completed after the Lopes wrapped up the decisive fifth match win to secure the team victory.
Grand Canyon (10-9) will play Academy of Art University, a school that has petitioned to become a full-fledged PacWest member next year, at 3 p.m. HT Saturday in the Lopes' final match of the league tournament.
GCU is 1-1 at the league championships.
"We don't like to over-celebrate the results since our main focus is attitude, effort and making improvements, but it is nice to get that 10th win," Antelopes second-year coach Greg Prudhomme said. "The conference and region that our GCU tennis team plays in doesn't make it very easy to get wins in the double digits, but our girls did that today and this season."
Eight of GCU's wins are against NCAA competition.
GCU's Tatiana Sumenkova (pictured main page) won her second singles match in straight sets at the tournament, beating Courtney O'Donnell, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Grand Canyon's Mandy Prudhomme improved to 11-8 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sally Olson at No. 5.
GCU swept the three doubles matches. Stephanie Haldeman and Veronica Brunk beat Rebecca Corteze, 8-1, at No. 1 pairs. Prudhomme and Karen Peltin beat Katelyn Mills and Olson, 8-0, at No. 2. Stefanie Griffin (pictured right) and Amanda Jackson defeated Ashley Wilson and O'Donnell, 8-1, at No. 3.
