GCU Shut Out By Conference Leader Dixie State
The Dixie State College women's soccer team has to win just two of its final four games at home to capture the Pacific West Conference championship. Tonight, it completed half of that task when it shut out Grand Canyon University, 4-0, in St. George Utah.
The Red Storm raised its record to 12-3 overall, 11-0 in the PacWest. The Antelopes dropped to 7-8-2, 4-5-2. It was the second time they have lost to Dixie State this season.
Wendy Stratford scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in the 50th minute on a crossing header. Her second goal came in the 81st minute on a right-side cross from Shannon Larsen. Erin Beeston, on a breakaway, and Camille Peterson, on another Larsen crossing pass, scored the other two goals in the second half.
Larsen assisted on all four of the Red Storm's goals, a season high.
GCU junior goalkeeper Mileena Buchei (Stansbury, UT/Grantsville) made five saves and senior midfielder/forward Kaylen Jackson (pictured, Tucson, AZ/Amphitheater) had four shots, two of them on goal.
The 'Lopes were outshot, 20-9, in the game.
GCU hosts Dominican University on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the GCU Soccer Field.
