GCU Wins Battle of Undefeated Teams
Junior midfielder/forward Juan Mendez (Bolivia/Horizon) connected with senior defender/midfielder Jesse Baker (pictured, Lakeside, AZ/Blue Ridge) on a corner kick at 20:47 to give the Grand Canyon University (GCU) men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Dominican University yesterday at San Rafael, Calif.
The Antelopes (7-1-1, 4-0 Pacific West Conference) remained undefeated in PacWest play, while Dominican (5-4, 2-1) suffered its first conference defeat.
Baker's goal was his first of the season. Mendez now has two assists, tied for eighth most in the conference. He also is tied for 10th in the conference in assists per game at 0.22.
Both teams took nine shots in the game, but six of GCU's were on goal vs. only three for the Penguins.
GCU junior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Roseban K College) recorded his conference-best fourth shutout of the season. He is second in goals-against average (0.65), save percentage (.829) and shutouts per game (0.44), tied for third in saves (29) and eighth in saves per game (3.22).
The 'Lopes host BYU-Hawaii (2-4, 1-2) at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at the GCU Soccer Field.
