GCU Beats BYU-Hawaii, Paneccasio Named PacWest Player of the Week
Freshman forward Kyle Ciliento (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) played the ball off his chest and kicked it into the goal in the 103rd minute to give the Grand Canyon University (GCU) men's soccer team a hard-fought, 1-0 double-overtime victory over Brigham Young University Hawaii Saturday at the GCU Soccer Field. The Antelopes have not lost in their past eight games, posting a 7-0-1 record. No other conference team has un unbeaten streak of more than three games.
It was the Pacific West Conference-leading fifth game-winning goal of the season for Ciliento, who also leads the conference in goals (9), points (21), points per game (2.10), shots (38) and shots per game (3.8).
The 'Lopes, ranked No. 17 in the nation and No. 3 in the West region in the current NSCAA National Rankings, improved to 8-1-1 overall, 5-0 in the PacWest. The Seasiders dropped to 2-5, 1-3.
GCU junior goalkeeper Ben Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Roseban K College) was named PacWest Men's Soccer Player of the Week for games played Sept. 28-Oct. 4. He posted three consecutive shutouts, 3-0 at Notre Dame de Namur (NDNU) on Sept. 28, 1-0 at Dominican on Sept. 30 and 1-0 over BYU-Hawaii on Saturday. He was credited with six saves in 282:23 of action, and his scoreless streak surpassed 300 minutes on Saturday at 3:05.56.
Three other 'Lopes -- Ciliento, senior defender/midfielder Jesse Baker (Lakeside, AZ/Blue Ridge) and junior forward Harvey Martinez (Miami, FL/Coral Gables) -- were named to the PacWest Men's Soccer Weekly Top 10 Honor Roll.
Ciiento recorded five points on two goals and one assist during the week. In addition to the game-winning goal against BYU-Hawaii, he assisted on the game-winning goal and scored an insurance goal against NDNU and finished the game with three points. Baker scored the game-winning goal at Dominican, his first goal of the season. Martinez scored the game-winning goal vs. NDNU, his first goal of the season as well.
GCU hosts Hawai'i-Hilo at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the GCU Soccer Field.
