PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University (6-9) suffered the wrath of Tom Lepley as he hit two grand slams and drove in 9 runs to single handedly lead #17 Western Oregon (5-3) to a 16-7 victory over the Lopes on Sunday afternoon at Brazell Stadium.
Western Oregon scored at least a run in the first four innings on their way to a 9-0 lead which was highlighted by Lepley's first slam off of Lopes reliever
Raul Rojas in the top of the third inning.
The Lopes got things started in the 4 th inning capped by
Cody Johns RBI single which cut the lead to 9-3.
Michael Trojanek kept things close for the Lopes allowing one run over 3.1 innings but it was Lepley who put things out of reach when he clubbed his second grand slam off of
Michael Deardoff making it a 14-4 game.
Wolves starter Kevin Corrigan went 7.0 innings allowing 5 runs (all earned) on 7 hits while striking out 4 to pick up his second win of the season pushing his record to (2-0).
Ben Belanger (0-2) picked up the loss for the Lopes after lasting 2.0 innings and yielding 7 runs (all earned) on 6 hits.
Jacob Hanna and
Matt Michael were bright spots for the Lopes each collecting 2 hits with Hanna clubbing his 2nd home run of the season.
GCU is back in action on Saturday, March 5th when they make their first road trip of the season to Honolulu , HI to take on Hawaii Pacific in a 4 day 8 game series. All games will be 7 innings. First pitch on Sunday is set for noon Hawaii time.
