Grand Canyon fell behind in the middle innings and could not recover as Oklahoma State took control with a five-run fourth inning to win 9-1 Friday night at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
GCU (2-3)
opened the series with a 12-8 victory on Thursday before Friday's result evened the four-game series, which continues on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The game was scoreless through the opening frames before Oklahoma State (2-3) broke the seal with a one-run third inning and furthered its advantage with a five-run fourth inning.
"We gave them too much in that (fourth) inning," GCU head coach
Gregg Wallis said. "Against a team like that, you can't extend innings and expect to get away with it."
The Cowboys pushed three more across in the sixth inning to conclude their scoring.
GCU got on the scoreboard in the seventh. Junior shortstop
Camden Bates opened the frame with a single and came around to score when pinch-hitter
Jake Sanko singled the first pitch to shallow center field. Sanko, a sophomore, missed the first weekend with a minor injury and drove in a run on the first pitch he saw this season.
Lopes juniors
Cannon Peery and
Billy Scaldeferri had middle-of-the-order production for GCU, combining to go 4 for 8. One of Scaldeferri's two hits was a sixth-inning double, GCU's only extra-base knock of the night.
The back end of GCU's bullpen had the best outings with senior
Brock Toney and junior
Tommy McGuire combining to toss three scoreless and strike out seven.
"Those were definitely bright spots," Wallis said. "Tommy and Brock coming out of the bullpen and doing really well. And then we're looking for areas to improve. And so I think we have definitely had both of those from tonight."
As a pitching staff, GCU struck out 17 Cowboys, the most in a game since the Lopes struck out 18 at Texas State on Feb. 28, 2025. The Lopes have struck out 15 or more batters in three straight games.
Since returning to Division I baseball in 2014, the Lopes had never struck out 15 or more batters in back-to-back games, and they've now done it in three consecutive games. For the season, GCU has struck out 62 batters in 43 innings, a rate of 13 strikeouts per nine innings that would have led the nation last season.
Seven of the strikeouts came from junior right-hander
Garrett Ahern, who was making his second start of the season. Ahern threw four innings, allowed six runs and walked four.
GCU and Oklahoma State will continue the four-game series on Saturday at 2 p.m. on the
Mountain West Network.
