Compiling 12 base hits and nine drawn walks, Grand Canyon frequented the basepaths in a 12-8 series-opening win over Oklahoma State on Thursday night at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
The Lopes (2-2) continued success against a Cowboys program that has participated in 12 consecutive NCAA Tournaments. GCU improved to 5-2 in its last seven games against the Cowboys played at Brazell Field dating back to February series wins in 2020 and 2017.
"I thought it was a complete team win," GCU head coach
Gregg Wallis said. "Gritty on the mound, obviously. Really, really good team over there that can really swing the bat. Gritty on the mound and just shorter swings in general. I think we faced some good arms and we worked all week on tightening the swings up a little bit. And you saw the result of that today with some better offensive approach."
With 25 total bases through the season's first three games, GCU's offense nearly matched it in Thursday's opener alone with 24 total bases (six singles, three doubles, three home runs).
GCU put three-run spots on the board in the first, fourth and fifth innings and added late insurance in the sixth and eighth. Oklahoma State matched GCU's three-run first inning with a three-run third, but the Cowboys couldn't parallel the Lopes the rest of the way. Each time the Cowboys closed ground, GCU responded.
"One of the best things about baseball is it has no memory, so every day is brand new," GCU junior center fielder
Griffin Cameron said. "We stayed with our approach. They're a really good team, so you know they're going to score runs. The key for us was not pressing and continuing to put pressure on them offensively."
Two of GCU's first three batters in the game drew walks, setting up junior first baseman
Cannon Peery's second home run of the season to stake the Lopes to an early 3-0 lead.
The Cowboys used a three-run homer of their own in the third inning to knot the score, but GCU responded with a three-run fourth to take a lead that it wouldn't relinquish. Cameron doubled in a run, and graduate third baseman
Vince Bianchina hit his first Lopes home run to score two more.
"It's (essentially) a Friday night baseball game against a good program," Wallis said of the series opener. "They're going to make a push. What I liked was how we responded — we didn't get sped up, and we continued to compete pitch to pitch."
GCU poured on three more runs in the fifth inning to build a 9-3 lead, this time without the help of the home run ball. Part of a three-hit evening, freshman left fielder
Tanner Johns singled in a run. Cameron drove in two more with a two-out single.
The Lopes capped a three-inning scoring streak by adding two more in the sixth. Graduate catcher
Mito Perez hit a leadoff homer, later followed by an RBI double from junior second baseman
Troy Sanders.
GCU added an insurance run in the eighth with a two-out single from a pinch-hitting
Billy Scaldeferri.
"It wasn't perfect, but we competed," Wallis said. "Early in the year, that's what you want to see — guys fighting through innings, taking good at bats, and finding ways to win games."
On the mound, GCU used three pitchers to navigate the game. Junior righty
JT Guerrero tossed the first 4 1/3 and was in line for the win before an early-season pitch limit stopped him a couple outs shy of qualifying. He struck out six of the 20 he faced, walking just one.
Out of the bullpen, graduate
Aidan Lee threw 1 2/3 innings of one-run baseball, before sophomore righty
Billy Gregory earned the save by finishing the game with three innings of work and seven strikeouts.
The series continues Friday as GCU hands the ball to junior
Garrett Ahern. The Lopes and Cowboys will start at 6 p.m. on
Arizona's Family Sports and
Mountain West Network.
