McKenna Newell joined the GCU sports medicine staff in July 2017 and now serves as the Associate Director of Sports Medicine. She provides athletic training services to GCU's women's volleyball and men's tennis.
During the 2023-24 season, Newell was a part of the staff that helped lead women's volleyball to their first WAC Championship and first NCAA appearance. In addition, she was a part of the men's volleyball staff that won their first MPSF Championship and appeared in the NCAA final Four.
Prior to working with women's volleyball, Newell served as the primary athletic trainer for men's and women's track and field and cross country for six seasons.
Starting at GCU as an intern, she worked with the men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track and field teams. She also served as an assistant athletic trainer for four years.
Newell, a native to Palm Springs, California, started her education at Azusa Pacific with a bachelor’s degree in Applied Exercise Science and a minor in Nutrition. She then received a master’s degree through Azusa Pacific's entry-level athletic training program, and earned her certification as a certified athletic trainer in April 2017. During her time at Azusa Pacific, Newell also completed her certification as a Certified Corrective Exercise Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and is also certified for dry needling.
In July 2017, Newell had the opportunity to join the USA Track and Field medical staff in Sacramento, California, for the U.S. Outdoor Championships.
