John Marcum joins the women's baseketball team as assistant coach for the 2016-17 season.
With the addition of the former East Carolina associate head coach to the Lopes staff, Marcum brings over 18-years of experience to the program and a proven talent for recruiting to the fold.
Marcum joins the Lopes after spending the past three seasons at East Carolina where his responsibilities included recruiting efforts, scouting/game preparation and opponent scheduling. As Associate Head Coach, he helped the Pirates earn its first top-50 signing class in program history in 2015 according to the Dan Olson Basketball Report. In 2014 the Pirates also produced the No. 2 recruiting class in the American Conference, just behind reigning national champion UConn. Throughout his tenure at ECU, his recruiting efforts were fundamental to the team's growth and success. In addition to recruiting, his responsibilities included, scouting/game preparation and opponent scheduling. He also had the privilege to coach two-time All-American Athletic Conference First Team guard/forward Jada Payne who scored over 2,000-career points, as well as two-time All-American Athletic Conference Second Team forward I’Tiana Taylor.

Marcum also spent the 2012-13 season at Indiana State, where he helped guide the team to an 18-win season and spot in the postseason for the first time since 2005-06 when they made an appearance in the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). He also served as the recruiting coordinator and helped compile a No. 65 recruiting class in the nation in 2013.

He took his first head coaching job at Cal Baptist for two seasons and led the team to a 47-12 record. The Lancers captured their first-ever conference championship in Marcum's first season in 2010-11, reaching as high as No. 3 in national rankings while making the school's first national tournament appearance since 1982.

After finishing his collegiate baseball career at NAIA-member Oklahoma Baptist University, Marcum got his coaching start at his alma mater where he served as assistant to the men's basketball program from 2002-2006. He then transitioned to the women's basketball program from 2007-2010.

Marcum played baseball and graduated from Oklahoma Baptist in 1997 with a bachelor's in secondary education with a concentration in history. He was a member of OBU's NAIA World Series team in 1996 and served as the president of OBU's Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter. He earned his master's in secondary education with a concentration in physical education in 2003 from East Central University.

In 2002, he served as an assistant coach to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the Oklahoma Storm of the United States Basketball League, leading the Storm to the USBL championship.
