The first season in a new era of Grand Canyon women's basketball already comes with a program first – national television.
In their inaugural Mountain West season, the Lopes will be featured on national television at least twice this season with the selection of two of their conference games.
The Havocs' support for GCU women's basketball will be on national display Dec. 17 when CBS Sports Network broadcasts the Lopes' Mountain West debut against four-time defending conference champion UNLV at Global Credit Union Arena.
A month later, GCU will be back on the national stage in MW play with FS1 showing its visit to New Mexico on Jan. 17.
"Opportunities for our program to be on national television are invaluable to growing our brand and success," Lopes head coach
Winston Gandy said. "We aspire to be recognized nationally for our basketball and our environment. This enables us to show both to a wide audience. And there's no more exciting way to start the Mountain West era than to have our first conference game on national television at home."
The Lopes start their most difficult nonconference schedule ever with a Nov. 3 season opener at three-time national champion South Carolina. GCU will face three defending conference champion and three programs or coaches who have reached the Final Four in the past seven seasons.
Gandy has formed a GCU roster with two returnees and 14 newcomers, who are replacing the starters and key reserves who graduated from the Lopes' first NCAA Division I Tournament qualifier in March.
