Mark Mueller enters his 13th season at the helm of the men’s golf program in 2025-26 and 14th overall in the program after serving as assistant coach in 2012-13.
Mueller and the Lopes had one of the best single seasons in program history in 2024-25, setting a new school record with a 58 final ranking in the Clippd Scoreboard rankings, as well as a trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the third consecutive season.
The 2024-25 season included seven top five finishes with a team title on its home course in the GCU Invitational. The Lopes ended the campaign with a new program mark of five All-WAC honorees and a major award winner in Matthew Diehl, who became the first WAC Freshman of the Year in program history. Diehl, along with Tommaso Zorzetto, received All-WAC First Team honors with Gavin O'Neill, Nixon Lauritzen, and Kiko Coelho garnering second team.
GCU competed as an at-large team at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, Nevada, in the NCAA Regional Tournament, a testament to its tough scheduling and placements throughout the season. The Lopes went 111-51-1 for the season.
Mueller and the Lopes captured their second straight WAC Championship title in 2023-24, leading the Lopes to the NCAA Regional Tournament for the second consecutive season. GCU earned eight top-five finishes in the 2023-24 season with three team titles, defending its team trophy at the Visit Stockton Invitational and claiming first at the Cowboy Classic. The Lopes' second WAC title came in Arizona at Chaparral Pines Golf Course in Payson, where GCU saw itself down 10 strokes with nine holes to play before a defining comeback was capped off by 2023-24 WAC Player of the Year Nicky Kling's nine foot putt to claim the trophy.
Kling, who also earned All-WAC First Team, was the second golfer under Mueller to win WAC Golfer of the Year, joining Vinnie Murphy, who did it twice in 2017 and 2018. Among other accolades include All-WAC First Team recipient Zorzetto and All-WAC Second Team honoree Matthew Pennington. GCU earned a trip to Austin, Texas, for the NCAA Regional Tournament, its second regional trip in program history. Mueller's success at the helm led him to his second straight WAC Coach of the Year honor.
Mueller has directed the program to the top of the WAC since becoming head coach in 2013 and led the team to its first ever WAC Championship title in 2022-23. The Lopes not only won the WAC title but tied a 54-hole WAC Tournament record for lowest team score at 34 under par, winning by five strokes to automatically qualify for the NCAA Regional Tournament as a team for the first time in program history.
GCU competed at the Institute Golf Club in Morgan Hill, California, in the NCAA Regional and held tight with some of the best teams in Division I golf as it was tied for sixth through 18 holes and fourth through 27. The Lopes totaled five top-five placements throughout the season with a team win at the Visit Stockton Invitational in Stockton, California. Mueller coached three All-WAC golfers including Parker Reddig (First Team), Matthew Braley (Second Team) and Nicky Kling (Second Team) and earned WAC Coach of the Year for the first time in his career.
Since becoming eligible to win the WAC Championship Tournament trophy in 2017-18, GCU has won the title twice, finished runner-up three times and third place once. Mueller's teams have never finished outside the top-three since 2017-18 and entered the 2019-20 tournament with the conference's best Golfstat ranking before the season was cut short.
Award-wise, the Lopes have produced two NCAA individual qualifiers, three WAC Player of the Year awards, 22 All-WAC honorees and 15 team tournament titles.
In 2012-13, Mueller helped lead the men's team to the PacWest Conference title and a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Championship. He also oversaw Jimmy Kozikowski's individual PacWest title and fifth-place finish at the NCAA DII Championship. Three Lopes golfers were featured on the Ping All-Region Team.
Mueller played collegiately for two years at New Mexico State before finishing his eligibility at GCU. He was a four-year letter winner for Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Ariz. Mueller captured the conference title during his senior season.
As a junior golfer, Mueller qualified for the BIG I Tournament. Additionally, he tied for first while representing Arizona at the Hogan's Cup, a tournament in Portland, Oregon, that included Tiger Woods as a previous winner.
Mueller graduated from GCU with a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a master's degree in Leadership.
