Lopes collect 6 hits but remain scoreless through 3 games of series at Utah
SALT LAKE CITY — Grand Canyon was limited offensively but continued to receive steady pitching and a bright spot from junior left fielder Carson Ohland in a 4-0 loss at Utah on Sunday afternoon at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark.
The Lopes (6-10) collected six hits and played error-free defense but could not break through against a Utah pitching staff that combined for the shutout. GCU will have another opportunity to respond Monday, when the teams conclude the four-game series.
Ohland led the Lopes at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance. His first single came in the second inning, and he later delivered another base hit in the fourth to help spark one of the Lopes' best offensive chances of the afternoon.
Senior designated hitter Dominic Chacon, sophomore third baseman Jake Sanko, junior right fielder Billy Scaldeferri and junior shortstop Troy Sanders each added a hit as the Lopes spread six hits among five players.
GCU had two hits in its first three at bats of the afternoon, but a strikeout/caught-stealing double play put a dent in the Lopes' threat.
Chacon and Ohland strung together a pair of hits in the fourth, but GCU couldn't push anything across.
Sanders led off the fifth with a single, but GCU lined into a double play to end the inning. Sanders' fifth-inning hit was GCU's final baserunner of the afternoon.
On the mound, junior left-hander Chase Frey delivered a solid outing despite taking the loss. Frey worked 5 1/3 innings, striking out five while allowing three runs before turning the ball over to the bullpen.
Junior right-hander Tommy McGuire followed with 2 2/3 innings of relief, limiting Utah to one run and keeping the Lopes within striking distance late.
Utah built its lead with a two-run second inning and added insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings. The Lopes, meanwhile, put runners on base in four different innings but were unable to generate the timely hit needed to break through.
Despite the result, GCU continued to show flashes on both sides of the ball and will look to carry that momentum into Monday's series finale as it seeks to avoid the sweep and close the road trip on a positive note. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. (Phoenix time).
