SALT LAKE CITY — Grand Canyon generated an early spark but could not sustain the momentum Monday afternoon, falling 7-2 to Utah at Charlie Monfort Field at America First Ballpark to close a four-game road series.
The Lopes' highlight came in the second inning when graduate catcher
Mito Perez opened the frame with a double to left-center, setting the stage for senior designated hitter
Dominic Chacon. Chacon followed by launching a two-run home run to left field, his second of the season, to give GCU a brief lead and supply the team's offensive production for the afternoon.
Perez's extra-base hit ignited the rally, and Chacon quickly capitalized, driving a 389-foot shot over the left-field wall that scored two runs and put the Lopes ahead early. The inning also featured another extra-base hit when junior shortstop
Troy Sanders doubled later in the frame as GCU collected three hits in the inning.
Utah answered in the bottom of the third and gradually pulled away, but the Lopes continued to battle throughout the afternoon. Sanders finished with a two-hit day, while Perez, Chacon, junior third baseman
Billy Scaldeferri and junior left fielder
Carson Ohland added one hit apiece as GCU totaled six hits in the finale.
On the mound, GCU used five pitchers with junior right-hander
Nicholas Robb drawing the start before freshman
Cody Kiemele, sophomore
Billy Gregory, graduate
Aidan Lee and senior
Elijah Higginbottom combined to cover the final five innings. Higginbottom delivered a clean eighth inning to close the pitching effort.
The Lopes now return home to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark looking to return to the win column with four games this weekend. GCU will host Saint Mary's and Rice for two games apiece, beginning Friday night as the Lopes open a homestand that provides an opportunity to reset and continue developing early in the season.
