Grand Canyon pushed Arizona State to the brink Tuesday night but came up just short in a 4-3, 10-inning loss at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Lopes leaned on a strong start from freshman
Cody Kiemele, who kept the Sun Devils (15-5) in check across six innings. The lefty allowed just one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. He worked efficiently through early traffic and held Arizona State scoreless through five innings, giving GCU (8-14) the chance to strike first.
GCU broke through with a two-run fifth inning, stringing together four hits to take a 2-0 lead. Redshirt freshman center fielder
Max Charles delivered an RBI single before sophomore second baseman
Jake Sanko followed with a bunt single to score another, capitalizing on the Lopes' most complete offensive inning of the night.
After Arizona State trimmed the deficit with a solo home run in the sixth, the Lopes responded again in the seventh. Charles doubled to open the inning and later scored on a productive out by junior catcher
Marcus Galvan to extend the lead to 3-1.
The Sun Devils answered in the bottom half of the seventh with a two-run homer to tie the game, but GCU's bullpen held firm to force extra innings. Senior righty
Brock Toney delivered a scoreless ninth, stranding the go-ahead run and sending the Lopes into the 10th with a chance to record a road win.
In the end, Arizona State walked it off in the 10th with the help of a little luck. With two outs, Lopes senior right-hander
Cam Cunnings drew a ground ball but it hit the bag at third and caromed into the outfield. A GCU error allowed the game-winning run to score from third as Arizona State won with an unearned run.
GCU compiled a strong midweek pitching effort, limiting the nation's No. 13 batting average to three earned runs over 10 innings of play.
The Lopes turn their eyes to their first Mountain West weekend, visiting Washington State for a three-game set that begins on Friday at 4 p.m.
