DALLAS – After a perfect weekend in California last weekend, Grand Canyon went on to face SMU in Dallas on Friday.
Opening up doubles play on Court 1, GCU senior
Dania Deaifi and sophomore
Bella Crossman lost a tight 6-4 set against Amelie Van Impe and Caroline McGinley.
Meanwhile on Court 3, Lopes sophomore
Peyton Duckett and freshman Amalia Suciu looked to continue their unbeaten streak as a pair. They came up just short, losing 6-3 to put SMU ahead 1-0 with the doubles point.
In singles play, Crossman put up a great effort against SMU's Sophie Llewellyn, who is ranked 46th in ITA and won 6-3, 6-1.
On Court 6, Duckett fell to Addison Comiskey 6-1, 6-3 before junior teammate
Gala Arangio lost 6-3, 6-0 on Court 3 to clinch the dual for the Mustangs.
Natalie Stasny of the Mustangs added a 7-5, 6-1 win over Deaifi on Court 5.
The last two courts were the hardest-fought courts for the Lopes by doubles partners sophomore
Karina Hofbauer and freshman
Hams Metwally.
Hofbauer lost the first set 6-2 before taking over in the second set for a 7-5 win. However, she lost the third-set tiebreaker 10-7.
Metwally earned the Lopes' only win as she faced a strong opponent in Ellie Mireles. Metwally dropped the first set 6-2 before dominating the second set 6-0 and securing a point for the Lopes with a 6-4 win in the last set.
The Lopes will take a break before they head to Auburn, Alabama, to take on UAB and Auburn next weekend.
