Grand Canyon scored two runs in the eighth inning and had the bases loaded in the ninth but fell short for a 3-2 Saturday loss to Pacific at GCU Ballpark.
The Tigers evened the series, setting up a 1 p.m. Sunday rubber match on Brazell Field.
A pitchers' duel commenced with both starters going four innings of no-run ball. GCU junior
JT Guerrero allowed just one hit without walking a batter on 46 pitches to begin his outing.
Pacific (5-5) eventually broke the scoreless tie with a fifth-inning solo home run to left field via shortstop Robert Orr.
The Tigers added two runs in the top of the sixth off RBI singles to left center by designated hitter Grant MacArthur and third baseman Rylan Evans.
The Lopes put runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, but a double play and a strikeout ended the frames. Sophomore third baseman
Jake Sanko found the hit the Lopes were seeking in the bottom half of the eighth, sending in two runs off a single up the middle to pull GCU within one at 3-2.
In the ninth, GCU first baseman
Cannon Peery became the potential tying run when he singled to right with one out, and left fielder
Carson Ohland singled to left to put runners on first and second. After a second out, junior
Camden Bates was hit by a pitch to put the potential tying run at third and potential winning run at second. But freshman shortstop
Austin Owens became Pacific's 13th strikeout to end the game.
"Pitching and defense tonight were great, but we just gave away too many at bats and had too many strikeouts," GCU head coach
Gregg Wallis said. "Thirteen strikeouts, especially with a lot of those with runners in scoring position, you have to credit their pitchers. But we had a lot of opportunities with runners in scoring position where all we had to do is execute, and we broke down on execution tonight."
GCU totaled nine hits, with Sanko and junior
Billy Scaldeferri each totaling two. The Lopes left a season-high 15 runners on base.
Guerrero and junior
Chase Frey combined for six strikeouts, with Frey going three innings of three-hit shutout ball with no walks and three strikeouts.
The series concludes with a 1 p.m. Sunday game on Arizona's Family Sports and Mountain West Network.
