SAN DIEGO – The effort from the Lopes was resolute throughout the Wednesday night Mountain West matchup at San Diego State, but a first quarter deficit proved too much in the end as the Lopes fell 87-69 at Viejas Arena.
GCU fell to 3-12 overall and 2-3 in MW play, breaking a streak of two straight conference road wins. SDSU improved to 11-3 and extended their Mountain West winning streak to a perfect 5-0 to start the season.
A 5-5 game through the first two minutes became 24-9 Aztecs at the first quarter media timeout. SDSU simply could not miss, making seven threes on seven attempts and shooting 81% from the field with seven different scorers. They led 37-9 after one.
GCU's deficit was the largest this season through 10 minutes, but the offense began a 7-0 run over a 1:15 stretch early in the second to start cutting into the Aztec advantage.
The Lopes won the scoring battle in the second quarter (20-14) and trailed 51-29 at the break.
With 29 points for the first half, the offense notched 23 in the third quarter alone. Senior

Julianna LaMendola each had five points while the team drained four 3 pointers and all five free throws attempted. The gap closed to 17 points (65-48) at the 2:43 mark of the third before trailing 73-52 at the end of three.
The Lopes opened the fourth quarter on an 11-4 run and saw themselves down 77-67 with four and a half to play. After scoring zero points through one half and 3 points through three quarters, sophomore
Chloe Mann tallied 10 fourth quarter points and finished the game with a team-high 13.
GCU's valorant effort fell short after shooting 45% from three and 81% from the line in the second half. The squad made 17 of 20 attempts from the line and dished out 16 assists in total, tied for third most in a game this season.
Senior
Anisa Jeffries nearly closed in on her second double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down seven rebounds. LaMendola had an all-around effort with eight points, four boards, six assists, one steal and a block.
