Young lineup gains valuable experience while facing two strong opponents
The Lopes battled hard in a doubleheader matchup today, one including their home opener.
GCU loses to UC San Diego 0-4
The Lopes had multiple flashes of excellence but ultimately fell short to the Tritons. In doubles GCU Sophomore Bella Crossman and Senior Dani Deaifi lost to Alisa Lansky and Allison Lian 1-6. On court number 3, sophomore Peyton Duckett and freshman Amalia Suciu secured their first win as a pair. The duo defeated Carling Chan and Hana Gamracy 6-3.
Over on court 1, GCU sophomore Karina Hofbauer and freshman Hams Metwally battled against Olivia Allegre and Julia Visiya of the Tritons but came up just short losing 6-7 in a tiebreaker.
In singles Visiya of UC San Diego defeated Duckett 7-5, 6-0. On court 6 Sydney Schnell, the freshman from Phoenix, made her Lopes debut. Schnell fell to Lian 2-6, 1-6.
On court number 3 GCU's Metwally took on Gamracy. Metwally dominated in the first set using her strong forehand and winning 6-2. She then went on to lose the next two sets 3-6, 3-6.
The rest of the matches would be unfinished as the Tritons clinched the match.
"Not some of the results we wanted today or the level we want to play, but got some quality matches we want under our belt early in the season. Experience for our newcomers and see the things we need to work on early on." Said Lopes coach, Dané Vorster.
After the near three-hour match, the Lopes would then head to Tempe to play in a match against a solid Arizona State team.
GCU loses to a top Arizona State 0-4 in Tempe
Following their home opener, the Lopes headed across town to Tempe, Arizona to face off against the Sun Devils.
In doubles Arizona State took the point winning on court two first as GCU's Crossman and Deaifi were defeated by Arizona State's Emilija Tverijonaite and Vivian Ovrootsky 6-1. On the court 1 draw Hofbauer and Metwally were defeated 3-6 from Arizona State's Karsyn Evans and Lily Taylor.
On court 3 Duckett and Suciu secured their second doubles win of the game defeating Zlata Bartanusz and Sarang Lim 6-3.
Over in singles the young Lopes continued to battle. Metwally faced number 76th ranked player Vivian Ovrootsky on court 3. Metwally fell 1-6, 2-6. On court 5 Duckett lost to Karsyn Evans in straight sets 0-6, 0-6
Arizona State's Zlata Bartanusz defeated GCU's Deaifi 6-2, 6-2 over on court 4. This clinched the match for the Sun Devils.
"I'm proud of how we responded and stepped up to find an improved level in our game against Arizona State," said Vorster.
The Lopes return to play on Monday as the face Depaul at 11 a.m. at GCU Tennis Facility.
