RENO, Nev. - The Grand Canyon men's golf team traded the sunshine and blue skies of Phoenix for a mixture of wind, sleet and overcast skies at the Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno, Nevada.
No team could prepare for the conditions of the NCAA Reno Regional's first round Monday. Winds picked up to 70 mph gusts in the early morning and stayed at 40-45 throughout the late morning and early afternoon.
Winds delayed the start, initially scheduled at 9:55 a.m. for the Lopes, until a 4 p.m. shotgun start for all teams. The Montreux course sits at the foot of Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, a popular ski resort just north of Lake Tahoe, with clouds and wind picking up from the mountain at such speeds that partial snow sprinkled the course.
GCU made it through seven to nine holes before play was halted at 6:13 p.m. The Lopes totaled an 8-over-par score and are tied for seventh with nationally ranked Santa Clara, three shots behind a group of four teams in third.
The top five teams from the Reno Regional advance to the NCAA Championships in Carlsbad, California, on May 23-28.
GCU's top player through a half round is WAC Freshman of the Year
Matthew Diehl, who is tied for third place at 1 under and is two shots back of the individual lead. Diehl began his day with three pars before using the wind to his advantage to drill a drive down the par-5 18th fairway, setting him up for an up-and-down eagle chance. Diehl made the green in two, however, during his walk up to the ball, the wind blew his ball 6 feet toward the back of the green.
The freshman still managed to birdie, and birdied his final hole at the par-4, third hole.
GCU graduate
Tommaso Zorzetto is 2 over, followed on his team by sophomore
Gavin O'Neill at 3 over, freshman
Nixon Lauritzen at 4 over and senior
Kiko Coelho at 6 over.
No. 28 Mississippi State and No. 40 San Diego are tied for the lead at 3 over.
Round one will resume Tuesday morning at 11:30 with the second round following it. The final round is scheduled for Wednesday.
