SAN ANTONIO – In front of a national television audience on ESPN, Grand Canyon senior guard
Alyssa Durazo-Frescas was crowned the Celsius Women's 3-Point Championship winner on Thursday night, further cementing her Lopes legacy as the greatest 3-point shooter in program history.
Entering the competition as the program and WAC record holder for 3-pointers made in a season (152), Durazo-Frescas showcased her accuracy, range and patent swish at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio against seven more of the nation's best shooters.
"I honestly blacked out the whole competition, so I don't even know what happened," Durazo-Frescas to ESPN analyst Jay Bilas.
But the worldwide viewership saw Durazo-Frescas tally 19 first-round points and 14 semifinal points before electrifying the crowd with 23 points to defeat Alabama's Aaliyah Nye in the final round.
Each contestant put up 25 shots, including 20 regular orange balls counting as one point per make and five gold money balls worth two points per make. Entering the final two racks of balls with 10 points in the first round, Durazo-Frescas made eight of her next 10 attempts to easily advance into the semifinal round.
The nation's leader in 3-pointers made per game this season, Durazo-Frescas tied Creighton's Lauren Jenson with 14 points at the end of the semifinal but won the tiebreaker based on most made shots in the semifinal round.
The star-studded final round featured Durazo-Frescas against Nye, who ranked third nationally with 3.4 made 3-pointers per game (3.4) behind Durazo-Frescas' nation-leading 3.9 average.
The California native showcased what she's done all year for a Lopes team that went 32-3 and won the WAC Tournament with the help of an All-WAC Tournament Team effort from the senior guard. She made 18 of 25 attempts, including each money ball, in the final round to tie for the most points of any round in the competition.
"That ball is touching zero part of the rim, zero," ESPN analyst Ron Slay said.
Durazo-Frescas made her first five shots of the final round and held up the champion chain in front of her mother, Monica, who was in attendance.
"All glory to God," Durazo-Frescas said. "It felt great to win, but all the glory goes to Him."
The first-place finish marks the second straight Lope basketball player to win hardware at the State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3 Point Championships, following Gabe McGlothan's win in the dunk competition last year at Global Credit Union Arena.
