MARICOPA, Ariz. – Arizona spring weather typically brings blue skies, a warm but not too hot temperature, and light wind on any given day. But Grand Canyon and the Cowgirl Classic field saw a much different spring day at the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, with winds swirling to upwards of 30 miles per hour and a cold front that has hit the valley.
GCU withstood the howling winds and carded a 20 over card to finish third out of 15 teams after day one of the Cowgirl Classic. Iowa State leads the field at 12 over, followed by UNLV at 13 over.
The Lopes hold a four-stroke lead over fifth place Sacramento State, with the fifth and sixth place spots differentiated by 12 strokes. All teams played the first two rounds today with the third round concluding tomorrow morning.
One over is the score held by three golfers that leads the entire 91 player field, and senior
Anci Dy is right there in the mix after a 1 under first round and 2 over second. Dy had six birdies on the day, with a score of three on the par 4, ninth hole to close out her day. Dy's birdie count is tied for seventh most in the field, while she is two pars (25) back of having the most of any player.
Dy was consistent on every par level hole, going even par on par 4's and 5's and 1 over on par 3's.
The Lopes have four of its starting five in the top 25, including junior
Lena Tremouille and sophomore
Brenna Preap, who are tied for 13th at 5 over. Tremouille settled in after a 5 over first round with an even second and is the field's overall leader in par 3 scoring (2 under). Her 27 pars are tied for most in the tournament.
Like Tremouille, Preap bounced back after a 4 over first round and shot 1 over in her second, totaling five birdies for the afternoon.
Graduate
Calynne Rosholt is tied for 25th with a 9 over scorecard, shooting 4 over in round one and 5 over in round two with three birdies in total.
Sophomore
Jess Haines is tied for 62nd at 19 over, with individualist's freshman
Matilda Samervong (T-56th/17 over) and junior
Amelia Curtis (T-71st/21 over) also competing for the Lopes.
GCU leads fellow WAC schools California Baptist and Southern Utah by 18 and 54 strokes, respectively, in the final regular season outing before the WAC Championship in Litchfield Park at the Wigwam Golf Club April 14-16.
