Former GCU infielder Dane Stankiewicz returns as Waves assistant coach

Returning from its first road trip of the season, Grand Canyon begins a four-game homestand with midweek action against Pepperdine on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Michael Potter and Tim Wilhelm calling the game.

3 THINGS TO KNOW

WELCOME WAKEFIELD: Junior outfielder Josh Wakefield made his first three starts as a Lope in the Texas State series and hit .700 (7 for 10) with a home run. That home run was a late-game, go-ahead solo shot in the series finale.

RPI RELEASE: The NCAA unveiled RPI rankings for the first time this season, and the Lopes checked in at No. 73. Despite its 3-9 record, Pepperdine checks in at No. 150, showing off its difficult early-season schedule.

DANE'S RETURN: Five-year GCU infielder Dane Stankiewicz returns to Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark as an assistant coach on the Pepperdine staff. Stankiewicz was at GCU for the 2017 through 2021 seasons and appeared in 98 games. He was a part of a GCU program that won four championships during his career and debuted in the D-I NCAA tournament in 2021.

SCOUTING PEPPERDINE

After opening the season with seven losses, Pepperdine has won three of its last five with a win at San Diego State and a home series win over Tulane.

The Waves have struggled offensively with a team batting average of .203 and a scoring average of 2.5 runs per game.
