PHOENIX — The Grand Canyon women's golf team completed Day 1 of the PING/ASU Invitational at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, finishing the opening round at 3 over par for ninth place out of 13 teams Friday.
The Lopes continue the tournament with 18 holes Saturday, followed by the third and final 18 holes on Sunday morning.
Host No. 9 Arizona State leads at 15 under, followed by No. 12 Northwestern in second at 9 under and No. 42 Pepperdine and No. 25 UCLA tied for third at 2 under.
The field consists of six teams ranked in the top 50 of the Clippd Scorebaord rankings.
GCU sophomore
Brenna Preap tied her season-best round of 3 under, shooting 69 with four birdies. Preap had three birdies over her first nine holes with only one bogey to her name. She trails overall leader Patience Rhodes of Arizona State by three strokes.
Lopes junior
Lena Tremouille ended her day at even par, notching a team-high five birdies with four of them coming on her first 11 holes. Tremouille is tied for 20th after matching her best round of the season.
GCU senior
Anci Dy and graduate teammate
Calynne Rosholt each had two birdies for their respective rounds. Dy is tied for 26th at 1 over, with Rosholt tied for 60th at 5 over. Lopes sophomore
Jess Haines shot 8 over and is tied for 70th.
GCU senior
Amelia Curtis, an individual entry, carded a 12-over total (76th).
Day 2 action begins Saturday at 8 a.m. on the No. 1 tee at Papago in Phoenix.
