SAN MARCOS, Texas — Grand Canyon opened the road portion of its schedule with a dominant pitching performance in shutting out Texas State 4-0 at Bobcat Ballpark on Friday night.
The Lopes (6-3) used the right-handed pitching duo of junior
Isaac Lyon and sophomore
Connor Mattison to post their first shutout victory of the season. Lyon spun six scoreless innings with a career-high 12 strikeouts. Mattison followed with three innings of shutout relief with six more strikeouts.
In winning for the fifth time in the last six games, GCU recorded its most strikeouts in a nine-inning game since March 8, 2018, a 19-strikeout effort against Penn State.
GCU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, striking for three runs in the second inning. Junior first baseman
Zach Yorke came through with a clutch two-run double, plating junior shortstop
Emilio Barreras and junior right fielder
Josh Wakefield. Later in the inning, a wild pitch allowed Wakefield to score, giving GCU a quick 3-0 lead.
Wakefield made his GCU debut last Sunday as a pitcher. In Friday's game, he made his debut as a Lopes position player and responded with a two-hit outing and two runs scored.
The Lopes tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when Barreras roped an RBI double to left field, bringing home sophomore second baseman
Troy Sanders and extending the advantage to 4-0. Barreras' 2-for-4 game kept his batting average at .500 through nine games.
GCU was facing Texas State (6-3) on the heels of the Bobcats' midweek victory over No. 1 Texas A&M.
The Lopes' 10-hit effort featured multi-hit days for Yorke, Barreras, Wakefield and senior third baseman
Eli Paton.
GCU will send sophomore right-hander
Garrett Ahern to the mound on Saturday for a first pitch at 1:30 p.m. (Phoenix time).
