SAN MARCOS, Texas — Grand Canyon clinched its road series at Texas State, scoring nine unanswered runs to erase an early deficit and win 9-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Lopes' pitching was impressive again led by right-hander
Garrett Ahern picking up his third victory of the season. The sophomore tossed five innings, allowed only one earned run and struck out six. In long relief, junior righty
Elijah Higginbottom earned his first save with four scoreless and hitless frames with five strikeouts.
Texas State (6-4) scored runs in the first and third innings to grab a 2-0 lead, but the tides turned after a four-run fifth inning that put GCU (7-3) in front for good.
GCU cut the early deficit in half with a fourth-inning sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop
Emilio Barreras.
Sophomore second baseman
Troy Sanders led off the consequential fifth inning with a single and junior right fielder
Josh Wakefield followed with a double. After junior first baseman
Zach Yorke was intentionally walked, graduate center fielder
Eddy Pelc made the Bobcats pay with a lead-flipping double that hugged the right field line to score a pair. With a 3-2 lead in hand, GCU did more damage on a productive out and a wild pitch.
GCU continued the steady scoring with runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to make it a five-inning stretch of scoring.
Sophomore left fielder
Cannon Peery opened the sixth with a double and scored in a single from sophomore catcher
Marcus Galvan. With a sac fly from Barreras, GCU built its lead to 7-2 through six innings.
In the seventh, Peery reached on an error which allowed Pelc to trot home.
In the eighth, Barreras doubled to right to drive in Wakefield who had walked.
A balanced Lopes' offensive attack saw its 10 hits come from eight batters with multi-hit efforts from Pelc and Wakefield. After making his Lopes' batting debut on Friday, Wakefield got the starting nod again in Saturday's game and is cumulatively 4 for 6 (.667).
GCU will attempt a series sweep on Sunday and send junior lefty
Chance Key to the bump for a 1:30 p.m. (Phoenix time) first pitch.
