TEMPE, Ariz. Grand Canyon competed in the Thunderbird Invitational this weekend at Arizona State.
The Lopes sent freshman
Hams Metwally, sophomore
Peyton Duckett, senior
Dania Deaifi and sophomore
Bella Crossman to compete in the tournament.
GCU started strong in singles play Friday, nearly completing a sweep. Duckett secured a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Northern Arizona, Metwally defeated UC Santa Barabara 6-4, 6-2, and Crossman defeated Northern Arizona 6-1, 6-1.
Duckett also defeated Kristina Nordikyan of San Diego 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles, the Lopes won both matches with Duckett and Metwally defeating Hannah Read and Maria Shmakova of San Diego in a thrilling 12-10 tiebreaker.
Crossman and Deaifi took care of Northern Arizona's Natalie Rainke and Maddy Ludwig 6-1.
On Saturday, the Lopes continued to put on impressive displays against talented competition.
Deaifi grinded out a victory in three sets, defeating SMU's Natalie Stasny 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. Right after that match, Metwally defeated Andrea Noguera from Northern Arizona in two sets. Metwally won 7-6, 6-4, securing her second win of the tournament
Duckett rounded out her tournament, getting the victory against Northern Arizona's Natalie Rainke 3-6, 6-1, 7-6.
On the final day of the tournament, Deaifi was the solo victor, defeating Kristina Nordikyan of San Diego 6-1, 7-6.
The Lopes' next slate will be the Wildcat Invite to finish up the fall season.
