RENO, Nevada – Grand Canyon made a valiant effort at tying Thursday night's Mountain West match at Nevada but fell just short in a 1-0 loss.
In a game that GCU (6-5, 1-2 MW) led in shots, corner kicks and possession time, a 60th-minute header from Nevada's Jasmine Navarro off a free kick was the difference.
The first half was dominated by the Lopes, as they outshot the Wolf Pack 7-1, not allowing a shot on goal. Offensively, there were no threatening shots put on net, giving Nevada's goalkeeper a fairly stress-free four saves in the first 45.
Late in the first half, a great pass from GCU sopohomore forward
Ellie Johannes to sophomore forward
Reese Clem gave Clem a one-on-one opportunity heading toward net. A Nevada slide-tackle ensued, knocking Clem to the ground in the box. No call was made, as the head referee decided it was not egregious enough for a penalty. Despite the frustration from the GCU bench, the Lopes wound up getting that call late in the second half.
The second half brought the drama with each team getting off at least seven shots. The free kick goal was a defensive miscue with Navarro being left unmarked for the opportunity to head the ball to the back of the net, but it also was an impressive pass and finish.
GCU responded well in the final 30 minutes, applying constant pressure in the attacking third. Nevada spent most of that time clearing the ball out of bounds for many GCU throw-ins aimed at bringing the ball closer to the box for opportunities at an equalizer.
In the 86th minute, the Lopes had their very best chance. Senior midfielder
AJ Loera received a ball from sophomore defender
Samantha Amato, who dropped a pass into a scrum of Lopes and Wolf Pack players. Loera took a dribble to her right and was taken out in the box, earning a penalty kick for the Lopes.
Johannes was called to take her first career penalty kick. Her shot had the pace she needed to score, but after getting past the outstretched hands of Nevada keeper Mia Collins, the ball banged off the right post for no goal.
The Lopes fall to 1-2 in Mountain West play, holding at three points. Through three games, the entire conference sits at a standstill with four of Thursday's six matches ending in a tie.
GCU will make the drive from Reno to San Jose on Friday in preparation for a Sunday match at San José State at noon.
