The Grand Canyon swimming and diving team faced California Baptist in a dual meet Saturday, when the Lopes celebrated 13 seniors as the GCU women won 170-129 and the Lopes men lost 164-136
GCU had standout swims from numerous contributors, led by junior
Alex Volkov, who claimed first place in the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA B-cut qualifying time of 47.04 seconds. Volkov also contributed to a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.87 seconds.

Harper Houk, sophomore
Jasu Ovaskainen and junior
Mario Perez clocked a 1-minute, 27.82-second finish.
Houk was another key contributor for the men, taking second in the 100 breaststroke (55.37 seconds) and 200 breaststroke (2:02.24).
Ovaskainen and Perez delivered a one-two finish in the 100 butterfly, touching at 48.42 and 49.17, respectively. Perez also won the 50 freestyle in 20.61 seconds.
GCU sophomore
Joe Stephenson secured second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:49.79.
On the Lopes women's side,
Aleksandra Wegrzynowska showcased her talent, winning the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.00 and leading the 400 individual medley with a 4:23.08 mark. She also finished second in the 200 butterfly at 2:04.14. Senior
Maria Chatzi followed closely in the 200 freestyle, placing second at 1:52.14.
Graduate
Raphaela Nakashima took first place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.27 while freshman
Beth Young was right behind Nakashima at 1:02.82. The two later swapped positions in the 200 breaststroke with Young going 2:17.01 and Nakashima touching at 2:18.05.
GCU's
Maria Brunlehner placed first in the 100 freestyle (50.53 seconds) and second in the 50 freestyle (23.12 seconds).
Junior
Paula Martinez Moreno placed first in the 100 and 200 butterfly races behind times of 54.09 and 2:02.58.
In diving, the Lopes'
Lacey Neighbor took third in the 1-meter event with a score of 215.03 and first in the 3-meter event with 243.3 points.
On the GCU men's side, freshman
Omar Elsayed earned third in the 1- and 3-meter competitions with 324.08 points and 314.93 points, respectively.
The Lopes will head to Las Vegas to face UNLV on Feb.1 before heading to the WAC Championships in Houston (Feb. 26 - March 1).
