FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. —Â
Grand Canyon's fall debut at the Lumberjack Classic saw plenty of success for the new-look Lopes team.
All four players on GCU's fall roster made the trip north with each participating in doubles and singles competition.
"I am happy with the way we competed over the weekend," Lopes first-year head coach Dané Vorster said. "Both individually and as a new team, we are going to take away many good things and continue to build on them with the next few weeks of practice."
In singles, sophomore transfer
Gala Arangio won her way to the Blue Draw championship match. Straight-set victories over Veronica Kliuch of UNLV and Laura Duhl of host Northern Arizona put Arangio in a Sunday singles championship match against Patrycja Niewiadomska of NAU, who won a close battle 6-3, 7-5.
Arangio and junior
Dania Deaifi also found success in doubles with a quarterfinal win over NAU's Duhl and Leontina Stojanovic (6-4). After a semifinal loss on Saturday, the pair took the third-place match on Sunday.
"Gala was able to adjust to the altitude conditions well and play smart to close out some good wins," Vorster said. "She really battled in a close finals match."
Besides Gala, the team stayed busy. Senior
Valentina Del Marco participated in a singles round robin over the weekend. She won her match Friday (6-3, 6-2) and got a Sunday doubles win with her partner, freshman
Angelina Mihajlovic.
Mihajlovic competed in her first collegiate competition over the weekend. She picked up a consolation win over New Mexico's Allison Romero in the Gold Draw of the singles tournament.
The Lopes will return to tournament play as a team, Thursday the October 17th in San Diego, CA for the ITA Southwest Regionals.
