PHOENIX — #15 Mesa State had timely hitting as they swept a double header from Grand Canyon University (1-2) on Saturday afternoon at Brazell Stadium.
In game one Mesa State scored a run in the eighth and another two in the ninth to defeat Grand Canyon University 6-3. Brad Western tied the game for the Lopes in the 7 th on his sacrifice fly scoring Matt Michael. The Mavericks broke that tie their next at bat on a Bo Stohler solo shot to left field.
Josiah Ziegler picked up the loss for the Lopes out of the bullpen giving up 3 runs (2 earned) over 4.1 innings pitched. David Rider was the third pitcher out of the pen for Mesa State going 1.0 inning picking up the win. Brett Armour came on in relief notching his first save of the season.
In game two the Mavericks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first only to have the Lopes score three runs on a Matt Henne two run double and a Giancarlo Silverstri RBI double. That would be all the scoring until the top of the 6 th when Mesa State scored 7 runs on 3 hits. GCU pitching yielded three walks with Brett Vanhooser walking in two runs with the bases loaded.
Patrick Lawler picked up the loss for GCU falling to 0-1 while Rider picked up his second win of the day out of the pen to move to 2-0 yielding only 1 hit over 3.0 innings in game two.
GCU is back in action on Friday when New Mexico Highlands comes to Brazell Stadium for a 3:00 PM double header.
