PHOENIX — Grand Canyon University (3-2) swept a double header from New Mexico Highlands (0-2) on Friday evening at Brazell Stadium.
The Lopes overcame a 3-1 deficit in game one to take a 7-3 victory behind the timely hitting of
Matt Henne,
Matt Michael and
Cody Johns who combined for five of the team's ten hits.
Scott Welch went 6.0 innings yielding 3 runs all earned while striking out 6 en route to his second win of the season. Michael closed the door for the last 1.1 innings collecting his first save as GCU defeated NMHU 7-6.
Game two was an exciting 7 inning affair that saw GCU enter the bottom of the seventh inning down 9-8.
Josh Melum started the inning with a walk and advanced to second on
Craig Daniel's sac bunt. Marucs Edel drew a pinch hit walk and was removed for
Jacob Hanna who pinch ran. Henne drove a 2-2 pitch into left field for an RBI single tying the game at 9-9 apiece. The single was Henne's third hit of the game. Next Johns drew a walk loading the bases for
Brian Smith. On a 2-1 pitch Smith hit a bounding ball to the Cowboys short stop Miguel Gomez who couldn't get the ball out of his glove in time as Hanna scored on the fielder's choice giving GCU the 10-9 victory.
Michael came on to pitch the final 1.1 innings picked up his first win of the season. Dominic Didomizio earned the loss falling to 0-1 on the season. Marcos Castillo led New Mexico Highlands in game two going 2-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
GCU is back in action tomorrow night when they face Sonoma State at Brazell Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM.
