Cody Johns clubbed his first home run of the season in the first inning and had 5 RBI as Grand Canyon University (1-0) opened the 2006 season with a 13-9 victory over #15 Mesa State (0-1) on Friday night at Brazell Stadium.
Mesa State staked themselves to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by Sean McKinney and Matt Bodenchuk. The Mavericks failed to hold their only lead more than a half inning as Johns hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the first on the way to a 6 run inning on 5 hits. GCU added 3 more in the second behind 2 Maverick errors and another 4 runs in the 5 th to stake them to a 13-4 lead.
Mesa State fought back to score another 5 runs but it wasn't enough as the 'Lopes held on for the victory.
Giancarlo Silvestri collected 2 hits and 3 RBI to help pace the 12 hit attack while
Scott Welch went 5.0 innings striking out 6 to pick up his first win of the season. Maverick starter Pat Cheever lasted 2.0 innings yielding 9 runs (6 earned) scattering 7 hits while picking his first loss of the season.
Ryan Griep and McKinney each had 3 hits while Blaine Bernades clubbed his first home run of the season for Mesa State in the losing cause.
These two teams will conclude the series tomorrow at Brazell Stadium with a double header starting at noon.
