Grand Canyon concludes nonconference play with a Tuesday rematch against BYU. The Lopes will play in Provo for the first time since 1998 to begin a four-game set in Utah, concluding with a weekend WAC series at Utah Valley.
3 THINGS TO KNOW
- BYU SERIES: Entering this school year, the Lopes and Cougars had not met since sharing WAC membership in 1998. In 2023-24 alone, the programs have met on three occasions, albeit once in fall exhibition action. The Lopes and Cougars played on Nov. 4 at GCU Ballpark as part of fall ball. Fast forward 107 days and the programs were meeting again in Arizona, this time as part of the MLB Desert Invitational at Sloan Park in Mesa. GCU emerged with a 6-2 victory to improve to 3-0 on the young season. Fast forward 85 more days and the clubs meet on BYU's home turf in the final week of regular-season play.
- TITLE TOWN: GCU clinched its fourth consecutive WAC regular-season title on Saturday. The Lopes have now won six of the last seven WAC regular-season titles and hold the nation's best conference winning percentage the last six years. GCU has won 14 consecutive conference series and 27 of its last 29 conference series.
- WILSON'S STREAK: Senior left fielder Tyler Wilson is on a 20-game hitting streak, GCU's longest since future Boston draft pick Chad De La Guerra recorded a 24-game streak in 2015. Wilson leads the WAC with a .376 batting average, is the seventh GCU player to record 200 hits at the Division I level and has hit at least .300 in all four of his GCU seasons.
SCOUTING BYU
BYU has experienced some growing pains in its first year as a member of the Big 12. While the Cougars are just 6-21 in conference play, they are 13-8 in their nonconference games with a 4-2 mark against the WAC. BYU is 6-1 in home nonconference games. The Cougars are playing their final home game of 2024 on Tuesday.
While the Cougars do not have any qualifying player hitting over .290, they do feature four players with eight or more home runs. BYU has matched GCU's season home run tally at 61. Sophomore Easton Jones leads the team in batting average and home runs.
WHAT'S NEXT?
GCU finishes off the regular season with a three-game series at Utah Valley, the second-place team in the WAC. The Lopes clinched the regular-season conference championship Saturday. The series gets underway on Thursday at 5 p.m. (Phoenix time).
