Grand Canyon started hot and never looked back with a 7-0 sweep of Abilene Christian on Friday afternoon at GCU Tennis Facility. With the win, GCU extended its season-high winning streak to eight matches.
The Lopes remained undefeated in WAC play and have swept both WAC opponents that traveled to Phoenix this season.
GCU (17-2, 5-0 WAC) did not have much trouble in doubles with a notable 6-0 sweep from the third pair, freshmen
Iva Sepa and
Elizaveta Morozova. Similar to the previous home victory over UT Rio Grande Valley, GCU took each singles match in straight sets.
On Courts 4 and 5, Morozova and freshman
Valeriia Krokhotina had to battle for their first sets. Morozova won 7-5, and Krokhotina pulled off a 7-6 set win. On Courts 1-3, there was no trouble. Only two games were dropped between graduate
Natasha Puehse, senior
Santa Strombacha and Sepa in their singles matches.
GCU remains tied atop the WAC with Tarleton State (14-2, 5-0 WAC) with two regular-season matches remaining. The Lopes and the Texans will meet on Sunday at GCU Tennis Facility at 3 p.m. (Phoenix time) for a match that decides at least a share of the WAC regular-season championship.
